I first met Gary at Sawyers Squash Club. He was wearing full Virgin Atlantic Engineering uniform. I was BA longhaul Cabin Crew at the time so the airline industry was a common link, we also shared the same birthday 08 September. One of the first things G said to me was “ I’m just a regular guy, what you see is what you get” How so untrue was that. G always played the ‘Grubby Engineer’ when in fact he was a very qualified Avionics Engineer with a plethora of knowledge. He could also fix cars and on one occasion actually changed the engine on his Rover. He was also an accomplished Squash player who pitted his wits against better players until he surpassed their standard & moved on. He did the same with Snooker. He was an excellent & safe motorcyclist. I remember one occasion we were in the Greek isles & wanted to hire a boat for the day. They only had speedboats left & wouldn’t hire to us as neither of us had a speedboat license. Within weeks of returning home he’d booked us a speedboat course in Brighton…….he said “I don’t like being told I can’t do things”. G had a passion for German U-boats & an interest in WW2. He enjoyed various films & used to try and locate where certain scenes were filmed & then visit them. He was an incredibly kind, decent & giving person who lived by rule that “I see the good in everyone until they let me down”.
